Some children and young people need extra support to help them learn. This might be because of reasons like temporary medical conditions, family circumstances, bullying, language and communication disorders or sensory impairment. These needs can be short or long-term. Working in partnership with Local Authorities and other agencies, The Scottish Government is committed to ensuring provision for all learners to achieve their potential, whatever their personal circumstances.

The Education (Additional Support for Learning) (Scotland) Act 2004 (and 2009 amendments) provides a framework for Local Authorities and other agencies to support all children.

In 2010, The Scottish Government commissioned Peter Doran, to examine the learning provision for children and young people with complex additional support needs. The Doran Review’s interim report was published in October 2011. Final report publication is expected in the second half of 2012.

The Scottish Government also funds Enquire, the Scottish advice service for additional support for learning. Enquire provide advice about any aspect of additional support for learning to parents, carers and professionals. Their website contains useful information including a range of guides and factsheets.
